Celebrations abound

The eighth annual Race for Virginia and Friends 5K Run/Walk will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Cranberry Township Community Park.

This year's race will be run in honor of Danielle Renne Wick, a Center Township girl who died in August after a battle with an aggressive brain tumor just shy of her seventh birthday.

Registrations are being accepted at www.raceforvirginia.org. In-person registrations and race packet pickup for those who have already registered is at the Jaycees Shelter from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Registration will also be taken from 7 to 8 a.m. on race day, Saturday. For more information, e-mail at inforaceforvirginia.org or call 724-772-7429.

The race started in July 2002 to honor the life and spirit of Virginia Clark of Seven Fields, who died of Neuroblastoma just a month after her ninth birthday and to raise money for pediatric cancer research.

Cranberry Community Days, previously held on July 4, has been moved to July 9 to 11.

Fourth of July festivities begin at 5 p.m. Saturday with a children's bike parade through downtown. The lineup for the parade begins at 4 p.m. at Marburger Field on Arch Street.Following the children's bike parade, the Grand Parade will makes its way through downtown starting at 6 p.m. The lineup for the parade begins at 5 p.m. at Marburger Field on Arch Street.Food, music and a basket auction will be offered from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the park, followed by a fireworks display at 10 p.m.

Nashville recording artist Sarah Wilson, a Chicora native, will be featured for July 4th festivities Saturday at the Slippery Rock Sliders game.Proceeds from the event leading up to the 7:05 p.m. game time against the Butler Blue Sox will benefit the Wound Warrior Project.Activities kick off at 3:30 p.m. and feature several musical acts. Wilson will take the stage about 5 p.m.She will sing the national anthem before the Sliders-Blue Sox at Jack Critchfield Park.Wilson's new release "Walkin' on the Blue Side" just moved into the top 10 in the secondary charts. She will open for Collin Raye and Restless Heart at the Indiana County Fairgrounds July 19.Following the July 4 game, the Sliders will present fireworks and patriotic music.

The annual Fourth of July community parade will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday on Main Street.Revelers are asked to return to the downtown area at 8:15 p.m. for a concert featuring the Pittsburgh Philharmonic Orchestra at Community Park.The community will close out the holiday festivities with a fireworks display at Community Park.

The Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta will be held this weekend with activities at Point State Park in Pittsburgh.Good viewing sites are on the river's edge behind Carnegie Science Center next to Heinz Field.

A Back to the 1950s weekend will take place Thursday to Sunday at Cascade Park.The 23rd annual event features live entertainment, exhibits and food.For information, call 724-654-8085 or visit the Web site, www.backtothe50sweekend.com.

Old Glory is paraded proudly during Mars' Fourth of July parade in 2008. Numerous communities are making plans for their Independence Day celebrations this year.
