Accidental blaze led to firefighter’s death

CLEARFIELD — A house fire that led to the death of an 18-year-old volunteer firefighter started accidentally.

A state police fire marshal from Clearfield says the March 3 fire started when a mattress leaning against a wall fell onto propane heater about 9 a.m.

Jeffrey Buck, 18, a firefighter from Lawrence Township died several days after a porch roof collapsed onto him and two other firefighters. The others suffered only minor injuries, and the couple who lived there with three children also escaped with only minor injuries.

The investigation into the porch roof collapse itself was continuing.

Memorial springs up for bald eagles

PITTSBURGH — People in Pittsburgh are placing flowers and signs of encouragement at a makeshift memorial to two closely watched bald eagle eggs that failed to hatch.

The memorial sprung up after the eagles abandoned their nest for the season last Friday after the loss of their second egg.

One sign showed a picture of the birds below the words: “Next year, Mom and Dad. We love you!”

A round-the-clock video feed drew immense attention to the nest in the city’s Hays section.

The stream racked up about 3.5 million views last year as three eggs successfully hatched, learned to fly and left the nest.

The eagles have been in Pittsburgh for three years. They’re the first eagles to nest in the city in 150 years.

Police: Center turned into heroin den

SHAMOKIN — Police say a Pennsylvania man turned his mother’s day care center into a heroin den once the kids left for the day.

Ryan Varano told police he and another man would use Jesus’ Lil Helpers Daycare to sell and use heroin on nights and weekends.

Police say they used children’s tables, chairs and cabinets to package heroin and load syringes.

The 28-year-old and two other men were arrested Saturday after someone at the building called police to report an overdose.
