Many times we can be stumped about what to give an outdoors person when they seem to have everything imaginable.

My wife claims that I am one of those guys that always seem impossible to buy a gift for at Christmas.

I do admit that I can be choosy about certain things and would like to reserve the option of deciding for myself.

Items like sporting arms, boat equipment, boots and optics fall under this category.

Mainly because I know what I like and don’t like!

But there are a lot of other things that might interest me but are not budget busters either.

The PA Game Commission has an Outdoor Shop that offers merchandise to anyone interested in the outdoors of Pennsylvania. The prices range from $3 to several hundred dollars depending on what you are seeking.

I am an enthusiast for books and calendars as well as collectibles.

The PGC has an interesting selection of antiqued pewter pins and ornaments that fall in the $3-6 range.

Not a budget buster but a definite point of interest. Add their 2016 Birds of PA Calendar or the 2016 PA Wildlife Calendar and you have the start to a nice gift package.

One book that they offer is the PA Big Game Record Book for $6 and also the topographical maps of State Game lands.

Meanwhile the PA Fish and Boat Commission offers two nice books featuring PA Fishes and the other is PA Amphibians and Reptiles.

They have a great kid item with Go Fish Cards that feature 52 cards with a plastic backing for only $5.

Wall charts that feature all types of fresh water fish, reptiles and amphibians are both interesting and educational for every age.

The gift of a fishing license or fishing gear is always a welcome addition under the tree on Christmas morning.

The fishing button that is making a comeback is now in its third year.

The theme color this year is the Brook Trout Pattern and is an additional $5 when you order your license.

The button enables you to wear it as a substitute to displaying your regular yellow license.

Those who are into photography, wildlife art, nature study or birdwatching have a limitless degree of options.

The gear can be as simple as pencils and sketchpads or as complicated as cameras with zoom optics, timers and freeze frames.

Optics such as binoculars, spotting scopes and trail cams can bring you in really close to the action.

Field guides and daily journals are highly useful for identification and notes about the species you are studying.

My wife says that there are plenty of computer and smart phone apps that can be downloaded to help you as well.

However, when I made a list of my cronies and the options for their use of apps she agreed that I should stick to the basics!

I would be amiss if I didn’t mention the Con Yeager Spice Company and their extensive list of spices and seasoning mixes.

They seem to have a kit for about anything that you would like to try with either wild game, beef, pork, fish or turkey.

One of my favorite is their Hot Italian Sausage Seasoning mix.

I have made 10 pound to 25 pound batches and then stuffed them in casings that they sell as well.

One year we made 3-B Sausage which used Buck-Bear-Boar meat with Cajun Andouille sausage mix.

We made the 25-pound mix and cooked it with apples, red cabbage and red wine and it was awesome!

Wouldn’t that be a delicious gift of your time and a way to share your harvest.

Finally, I would be amiss if I didn’t mention some home crafted items that good friends have given me over the years. I have been gifted hand carved walking staffs, hunting knives, slate and cross- saw paintings and wildlife nesting boxes.

Giving a landowner a duck box, a blue bird box or a feeder is a thoughtful and well received gift. Also a gift of your time is priceless and something only you can give.

I was hunting on my friend’s property this year and noticed that some thoughtless individual had littered along his property boundary.

My gift to him this year will be a Christmas card of thanks and a pledge of time to walk his property edge and clean up the litter.

It will make his property look better, help the environment and let him know that I appreciate his generosity of allowing me to hunt.

Until we meet again don’t be afraid to think outside of the box when you want to share the holiday cheer.
