Guthrie gets a new projector

College deal nets $30K for effort

GROVE CITY — The show will go on at the Guthrie Theatre thanks to a new digital projector.

“The Guthrie has been given a new lease on life thanks to all those who have contributed to the digital projector fund,” said owner Eric Thomas.

The Sony 4K projector, which cost about $60,000, was ready to go for the Nov. 20 debut of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

The theater started fundraising early this year, and had raised $30,000. Much of that money came from a campaign where people bought personalized decals to be placed on the back of the theater’s seats.

However, the theater got a big boost from Grove City College.

The college is providing the theater with $30,000 over two years as part of a marketing agreement.

The theater will provide the college with movie passes to distribute to the campus community, show a trailer highlighting the college before each screening and allow the college to use the theater periodically to show student-made films and hold meetings.

Mary DelBuono, director of marketing and communications at the college, said that the theater is an “anchor” in the borough.

“The college thought it was important to help the Guthrie remain open,” DelBuono said.

The theater had to buy the projector because major movie studios are phasing out traditional 35 millimeter film prints in favor of digital prints.

Fundraising for other improvements, including a new screen to match the projector’s capabilities, will continue. To learn more, see www.theguthrie.com or call 724-458-9420.

Thomas bought the theater in 2001. His wife mainly runs it because Thomas has a full-time job. The couple’s son and two daughters also work at the theater. It has eight employees and 420 seats.

The theater opened in 1927 and has operated continuously since then.
