John Leslie “Les” Houston, 84, of Butler, passed away on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family. Born April 30, 1939, in Butler, he was the son of the late John and Vesta (Gallaher) Houston.

John achieved the prestigious honor of becoming an Eagle Scout in his early years. He graduated from Butler High School in 1957, then from Westminster College in 1961 with his bachelor’s degree in accounting and mathematics. He went on to serve his country honorably in the U.S. Army. John spent the rest of his life serving, supporting and improving the lives of others.

He worked for 34 years at Butler Memorial Hospital and was instrumental in implementing their first ever computer system.

He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Butler and taught Sunday school for many years. He was also an active member of the Butler Fellowship of Churches. Over the years, he made significant contributions to the Butler Lions Club and assisted the Blind Association. He volunteered for Butler Meals on Wheels and served on the board of directors.

John was instrumental with local athletic organizations. He served for 10 years as the assistant head coach of the East Butler Legion Team, started the first Butler fastpitch organization, and contributed to the Butler High School programs both as a coach and umpire. He supported numerous field projects over the years to elevate and upgrade the East Butler Sports Complex and was an active member of Butler Basketball Boosters. He was extremely proud to be of any help to improve the playing conditions and opportunities for the youth.

He enjoyed playing tennis all of his life and more recently, pickleball. His greatest joy was in supporting his children and grandchildren in their sports and activities.

John leaves behind his wife of over 61 years, Marie (Crispin) Houston; and one brother, William “Bill” (Kay) Houston of Eden Prairie, Minn.; his children, Robbin (Greg) Yothers, Theresa (Paul) King and Jessica (Neil) Callahan; his nine grandchildren, Karissa (CJ) Seitzinger, Mitchell Yothers, Eric (Kelly) King, Emily Yothers, Jaclyn (Ethan) Morrison, Kevin King and Connor, Liam and Declan Callahan; and four great-granddaughters, Summer and Blaike Seitzinger, Hallie Morrison and Emersyn King.

John was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Valerie Houston; and his parents.

HOUSTON — Family and friends of John Leslie “Les” Houston, who died Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, will be received from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 120 Sunset Drive, Butler. A memorial service will follow at noon. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Butler YMCA.
