PITTSBURGH — Penguins forward Maxime Talbot will miss training camp and the beginning of the season after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
Talbot scored both goals in Pittsburgh's 2-1 victory in Game 7 against Detroit in the Stanley Cup finals last month.
Penguins general manager Ray Shero said in a statement that Talbot has played with the injury "for quite a while." Talbot's recovery will take four to five months.
Talbot has 42 goals and 80 points in 261 career NHL games.
The surgery was performed Tuesday at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
FOX CHAPEL — Nathan Smith, a member of St. Jude Golf Club, fired a 69 Tuesday, which was good enough to move him into first place of the Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational at Pittsburgh Field Club after three rounds.The first two rounds were played Monday and the fourth and final round will be played today.Smith, an amateur, leads John Aber of Allegheny Country Club by one stroke (211) followed by Ty Roush of Riverside Golf Club (212), Ryan Sikora of Pittsburgh National Golf Club (213) and amateur Nathan Sutherland (214).Rob McClellan of Butler Country Club is tied for 11th (219) while amateur Sean Knapp, another member of St. Jude, is tied with Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf & Country Club (222) and John Aubrey of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred is tied for 20th (224).
NEW ORLEANS — Led by Freeport graduate Lacey Cochran, 10 members of the Slippery Rock University men's and women's track and field teams were named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's All-Academic team.Jenn Harpp, Laura Mucho, Amanda Seigworth, Allison Smith and Tiffany Tedesco also were chosen from the women's squad. Joeri Moerman, Mike Rose, James Schneider and Jeff Weiss were selected from the men's team.To achieve the honor, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above and reach the NCAA provisional or automatic qualifying standard in their events.
WEST MIDDLESEX — Marissa DeCola of Center Township captured the girls 14-and-15 age division of the King's Restaurant Junior Golf Tournament Tuesday at Oak Tree Country Club.DeCola fired a 74 to defeat runner-up Shannon Gramley by five strokes.
