Saxonburg will not have Halloween parade
SAXONBURG — Now that trick-or-treat is making a sweet return to the borough this Halloween, the annual costume parade has faded away like a ghost.
Borough council President Carol Neubert said the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company will no longer have the children’s parade despite a prior report to the contrary.
Neubert, a fire company member who chaired the event, said the parade was started because trick-or-treat ended decades ago.
“For a long time, it was fun,” she said about the parade.
But Neubert said the return of trick-or-treating eliminates the need for the parade.
According to Saxonburg officials, the borough ended trick-or-treat decades ago due to a scare over what items were being given to children.
Neubert said that is no longer a concern.
“I think that has passed now,” she said.
Trick-or-treat in Saxonburg will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
Anyone who does not want to participate by handing out treats should leave the porch light off.
Mayor Pam Bauman encouraged businesses to participate that evening.
