James Richard “Dick” Shaffer of Butler died Wednesday with his wife and family at his side. He was 97.

Dick is survived by his wife, Sara Jane Sprenkle Shaffer; and three sons, James Richard “Skip” Jr. (Lori) of Ft. Myers, Fla., Peter H. (Janie) and William R. (Stephanie), both of Butler.

Dick was born March 13, 1919, in Butler to the late R.E. Jessie M. Shaffer.

A brother, William E. Shaffer preceded him in death.

Dick graduated from Butler Senior High School in 1937. After attending Grove City College, Dick began working with his father at Shaffer's Jewelry Store on Main Street in Butler. He succeeded his father as proprietor and owner and remained active in the jewelry business for 60 years.

Dick and his beloved wife, Sara, were married in 1941 at the Second Presbyterian Church in Butler. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on Sept. 25, 2016.

Dick was a golfer and an avid tennis player. He enjoyed collecting antiques and had a special affection for vintage clocks and watches. His love of woodworking showed with the intricate pieces of furniture he created.

A member of the Butler Masonic Lodge 272, Dick was honored in 2014 for 70 years of service and was an active member in the Christopher Gist Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.

As part of the greatest generation, Dick did his part in World War II. Physically unable to serve in the armed forces, he volunteered to work at Pullman Standard, manufacturing naval artillery shells during the war years.

Despite the commitments of his business, Dick was a devoted husband, father and grandparent. He was happiest spending time with his family.

In addition to those listed above, Dick is survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
