QUESTION: Why are you running for office?
CLARK: I’m dismayed that our board of supervisors treats newer residents as outsiders and thinks it is appropriate to respond to their concerns with questions such as, “Where were you when” and “how long have you lived here.”
Elected officials owe it to the electorate to listen with an open mind. Stifling discourse, refusing to allow residents to present information on contentious topics and making arbitrary decisions serves no one.
LEES: I am a lifelong resident of Adams Township and am proud to be one of the five residents who make up the Adams Township board of supervisors. I would like the opportunity to continue to help mold Adams Township into one of the best places to live in Western Pennsylvania. We have strived to manage growth and development in a manner that is beneficial to all township residents. This includes current and future improvements to our municipal park.
SHEMELA: I have been a resident and homeowner in Adams Township for 37 years and I would consider it a privilege to give the residents a truly conservative voice on the board of supervisors.
QUESTION: What do you consider the pressing matters facing your municipality? How would you address them?
CLARK: Natural gas development is a reality in Pennsylvania and townships need emergency planning that takes that reality into consideration especially when drilling operations encroach upon our neighborhoods and schools.
As a growing community, we need zoning that will protect our property values, ensure our safety and continue to make the township an attractive place to live. I will work to strengthen our zoning, develop real emergency planning and encourage openness between the board and community.
LEES: As the supervisor in charge of our police department, I work closely with our officers to make safety our top priority. We have added new technology to enhance various operations in this area.
Beyond any shadow of doubt, defending property rights associated with oil and gas is a major concern in the township. I will work to balance the needs and concerns of all involved.
SHEMELA: 1. Future Growth — Making the township a wonderful, safe place to live while at the same time planning for controlled future growth.
2. Property Rights — Assure property owners that they can use their property for legal purposes that they choose, utilizing laws and regulations that are currently in place.
3. Police/Fire Service — Give residents confidence that the most up to date equipment and training are available to the service personnel both paid and volunteer.
