Knoch freshman drops time, wins WPIAL title
PITTSBURGH — Winning a WPIAL swimming title wasn't the first and foremost thing Brooke Zukowski concerned herself with Friday.
But Knoch's freshman standout took one home anyway.
Seeded third in the Class AA girls' 100-yard breaststroke, Zukowski turned in a championship time of one minute, 5.05 seconds at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool.
“I wasn't that worried about place, I just wanted to improve my time,” said Zukowski, who accomplished that by taking 3.28 seconds from her seed time. “I didn't know I was winning during the race. I didn't find out until I looked up at the clock and thought, 'Oh my God!'
“I'm pretty excited right now,” she added. “It was a good day.”
Yough's Madison Nestor entered the event as the top seed and Indiana's Anna Paccapaniccia second, but they placed fourth and second, respectively. Just four-tenths of a second separated the three swimmers' seed times.
“The top three were neck-and-neck,” said Knights' coach Rick Hassler. “It was anybody's race to win.”
Freeport junior Bria Otwell finished second in the 500 freestyle behind Highlands freshman Bailey Bonnett. On Thursday, Otwell was third in the 200 individual medley.
“I feel better now than I did about yesterday,” she said. “I know I can do better than (5:02.89 in the 500), but I'll take it.”
Earning a medal by placing sixth were Freeport sophomore Zoe Pawlak (54.22 in 100 freestyle) and Knoch sophomore Abby Jones (5:20.16 in 500 freestyle).Mars senior Gracie Pacey earned a medal by finishing eighth in Thursday's 50 freestyle.
Class AAA
Seneca Valley's Ali Kozlina managed a sixth-place effort in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.71.
She took fourth place in Thursday's 50 freestyle and will wait to see if her times are good enough to survive the secondary cut for the state meet, to be held later this month at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.
“I thought she had a really good meet,” said Raiders' coach Brian Blackwell.
