Accidental blaze causes about $2,000 in damages

WEST LIBERTY — A man using a torch while working on a vehicle Saturday afternoon accidentally set fire to a detached garage at his home in this northern Butler County borough.

No one was injured and firefighters were able to minimize the damage to William MacTaggart’s two-stall garage on Church Road.

MacTaggart told authorities he was working with a cutting torch to remove the wheels from a vehicle about 1:40 p.m. when a wall caught fire, said Chief Dave Taggart of the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company.

The owner got out safely and called 911. Firefighters shot compressed-air foam and water onto the garage and quickly snuffed out the fire.

Damage was estimated at $2,000. Taggart noted most of the damage was to the wall of the garage that caught fire.

The Unionville Volunteer Fire Department assisted Slippery Rock firefighters. Crews were back at their stations by 2:35 p.m.
