Gilbert “Gib” McGarvey, 79, of Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of North Washington, Pa., passed away on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Brooklyn Hospital Center after a short battle with cancer.

Gib was born on May 10, 1944, in McAllen, Texas, where his father was stationed in the Air Force. He was the son of the late Gilbert J. McGarvey and Juanita J. (DeVault) McGarvey Martin.

He was a 1962 graduate of Moniteau High School and a 1966 graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology. Gib worked for several years in Rochester before moving to New York City, where he worked as a buyer for B. Altman and later for Bloomingdales. Together with George Wong, Gib opened a shoe store, 9 and ½ Plus, which was very successful up until being sold. Most recently, he had been employed by Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, where had been a union officer for many years. Gib was on the board of directors at Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center and was an active member of the Bethany Baptist Church in Brooklyn. He also enjoyed buying real estate properties, renovating them and renting them out.

Gib is survived by his longtime companion, Ernest Simmons; many good friends; and his cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, who passed away in May 2023; his stepfather; and many aunts and uncles.

MCGARVEY — Family and friends of Gilbert “Gib” McGarvey, who died Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, will be received for visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at WILLIAM F. YOUNG FUNERAL HOME, 132 Main St., West Sunbury. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Edmundson, retired pastor of Concord and North Washington Presbyterian churches, officiating.

Gib will be laid to rest in North Washington Cemetery beside his mother.
