SRU president takes top spot with Rotary
During a recent joint meeting of the Butler Rotary Clubs held at the Lake Arthur Golf Club, officers were installed for the 2004-05 Rotary year.
Robert Smith, president of Slippery Rock University will serve as president of the Butler Evening Rotary.
Other evening Rotary officers include president-elect, James Ferguson; vice president, Karen Diehl; secretary, Peter Richdale; and treasurer, Bill Douthett.
The new A.M. Rotary Club president will be Candy Hartley, owner of Temps-Unlimited.
Her board of directors will include president-elect, Ed Green; secretary, Dean Weiland; and treasurer, Clint Champagne.

The Butler Evening Rotary was named Outstanding Rotary Club in the Western Pennsylvania district for the year 2003-04.
The Butler A.M. Rotary Club was presented the Community Champion Award for its Special Kids Zone Playground project at Alameda Park.

Helen Boese of Butler was among six women recently honored at the foster grandparent program of southwestern Pennsylvania award luncheon held in Washington County.
Boese was honored for her six years of service at the Bon Aire/Butler County Children's Center.

Lauren Groves, daughter of Jeff and Kathy Groves of Chicora, was recently named the 2004 Riverfest Queen at the East Brady Riverfest Pageant held June 26.
Groves is a 2004 graduate of Karns City High School and plans to attend West Virginia University in the fall.
The award for miss congeniality was presented to both Leah Groves and Heather Pate.
Brittany Senard received the award for highest sponsorship, and Pate also received the award for best interview.

Lyric Ackelson of Butler will perform as Amaryllis in the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera's production of "The Music Man" which opened Tuesday at the Benedum Center.
Alexa Hank of Coraopolis and Abigail Franc of Cranberry Township were chosen to participate in the production's children's chorus.

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star
recently donated $90,000 to the Susquehanna Service Dogs Program in Harrisburg. The organization also presented a service dog to a Scranton-area boy with a disability.
The funds were raised through a soda tab collection program called "Tabs for Tots."
Among the donations received by the Pennsylvania chapter was a $200 check and 900,000 soda tabs donated by a group of students from Evans City Middle School.
The Order of the Eastern Star has 42,000 members in Pennsylvania.
