Tenants salvage items from burned building

Tenants who lived in the Worsley's building are getting their first chance to salvage personal items after Friday's fire. This is the inside of one of the apartments.

“Some pictures ... I had a picture of my dad, sister and me and my first son that’s special to me. I got that back,” said Kayla Hildebrand of items she saved on her trip back Tuesday morning into her apartment in the burned out Worsley’s building.

Hildebrand, 29, lived on the second floor, a level below where the devastating blaze broke out Friday, with her fiance, David Shoup, and their 3-year-old son, Jory.

Hildebrand said she and Shoup were first permitted into the building at 161 N. Main St. on Monday. But Hildebrand said all searching for items stopped when they found the family cat, Tickles, which had been missing since the fire broke out.

“We were like, ‘Oh my goodness.’ He’s been missing for three days, and everyone said it wasn’t likely anything in there was alive,” Hildebrand said.

Tickles, who has sore paws and singed whiskers, is staying with a foster family while Hildebrand and her family are staying in a hotel.

In addition to some cherished photographs, Hildebrand said she salvaged glassware that could be washed, a favorite Superman toy for her son and a few other items from her apartment.

On the advice of Butler City Fire Chief Nick Bann, toiletries and food were abandoned.

“It’s hard because we are sifting through all that soot,” she said. “Everything is waterlogged.”

The fire left 12 people homeless.
