SV's Bernhard carries

Raiders offense in 7-5 win

JACKSON TWP - As a group, the Seneca Valley offense was not at the top of its game.

Fortunately for the Raiders, Erin Bernhard was.

The junior scored six of her team's seven goals in Seneca Valley's 7-5 win over Butler in a Section 1 girls lacrosse battle on Senior Recognition Night Tuesday.

"Erin and Laurie Lindner are our top two scorers," said Raiders' coach Christie Albright. "But (Laurie) was sick tonight and was unable to play, so we slowed the offense down a bit."

But there was no slowing Bernhard down in the first half.

With the score tied at one early in the first half, she began her assault on Butler's defense.

Her first goal came with 5:57 gone in the half.

Fourteen minutes, 38 seconds later, she scored her sixth and final goal, which gave the Raiders a 7-4 halftime advantage.

"Erin is so versatile," said Albright. "She can play any position. She averages between four and five goals per game and is really an amazing player."

"Really, it was just one player that hurt us," said Butler coach Julie Baccanti.

The holes Bernhard found in Butler's defense in the first half were simply nowhere to be found early in the second 20 minutes of play.

The Raiders' first shot on goal in the second half didn't come until 11:05 had elapsed.

Butler goalie Summer Doctor stopped all eight of the shots she faced in the second half, ending the night with a total of 11 saves.

"This was one of the better defensive games we've played," said Baccanti. "We are typically a second half team and Summer came up with some good saves for us, but it still hurts when you're not able to score goals at the other end."

Indeed, Butler's offense was not able to put a dent in SV's 3-goal lead until Jane Resnick scored her third goal of the game with just 28 seconds left in regulation.

"Defensively, we did a good job of shutting them down," said Albright. "Offensively, we weren't passing well at midfield and couldn't catch the ball today."

Alex Petrucci scored Seneca Valley's first goal 1:25 into the game for a 1-0 lead.

Also scoring for Butler were Rachel Cleary and Katie Sloan.

Natalie Kalnas collected eight saves for Seneca Valley (6-5), which can solidify its playoff chances later in the week.

"If we win at Fox Chapel on Thursday, that will put us in pretty good shape," said Albright.

Seneca Valley honored four seniors prior to the game - Michelle DeGrothy, Erica Marzock, Shaelin Knebel and Megan Powell.

Butler (1-12) will travel to Shaler on Thursday.
