Community collaboration creates positive impact
In last Friday’s edition of the Butler Eagle, we saw the impact of the community coming together. Positive things happen when collaboration happens between area organizations.
We think that the collaboration between St. Luke Lutheran School in Jefferson Township and Ambrose Farm in Winfield Township is just that: a positive thing.
On Thursday, Sept. 21, students at St. Luke school traded in the classroom for the fields. They traveled to Ambrose Farm to harvest a variety of produce, including eggplants, sweet corn, tomatoes and peppers.
The students would later deliver the food to several local charities, including the Salvation Army, Katie’s Kitchen, and the Lighthouse Foundation.
Why take students out of the classroom for a day like this? We’ve highlighted the value of being outdoors before, but also, such activities like this show students firsthand the impact of their service in the community.
Positive change can happen when you lend a hand.
St. Luke school principal Angela Turner said she hopes the experience, which is a tradition for eighth graders, would help students to foster a “servant heart.”
“For us, that's worth taking the time away from academics, because we try to work with the children to educate them as wholes … not just academically, but spiritually and emotionally as well,” she said.
We think she put it well. It is important for schools to invest time in their students growing as citizens.
Kudos to St. Luke school staff for investing in this worthwhile endeavor and to Ambrose Farm for donating the produce. Thank you for helping our young people to grow positively.
