E. Maxine Hilgar, 86, of Slippery Rock passed away at 12:45 a.m. Sunday at Butler Memorial Hospital following declining health.

Born in Wick, Slippery Rock Township, March 13, 1924, she was the daughter of William Lutz and Minnie McBride Lutz.

She enjoyed 52 years of marriage to John Robert Hilgar, who she married in October 1942, and who preceded her in death in July 1994.

Maxine was a homemaker and lifelong member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, where she worked faithfully as music director and organist for more than 30 years.

An avid quilter and needle crafter, she enjoyed making treasured keepsakes such as quilts, wall hangings, tablecloths and sweaters for family members and others. She helped to coordinate the Meals on Wheels program in Slippery Rock for 17 years.

Maxine was a great cook and loved to bake bread and rolls which she generously shared with family, friends and neighbors. Those who knew her will remember her generosity, kind heart and loving spirit.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Hilgar and his wife, Lyn, of Crossville, Tenn., and Don Hilgar and his wife, Debbie, of Slippery Rock; a daughter, Sandra and her husband, Dennis Grosky, of Slippery Rock; grandsons, Michael Hilgar and Gordon Hilgar, both of Florida; granddaughters, Shannon Hilgar and Molly and her husband, Jim Kuminkoski, all of Butler; two great-granddaughters; three nieces; and two nephews.

<B>HILGAR</B> — A memorial service for E. Maxine Hilgar, who died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, is being planned and will be announced later. There will be no public viewing or visitation.Memorial contributions may be given to the Bethel Presbyterian Church, 205 White Oak Drive, Slippery Rock 16057Arrangements are under the direction of <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, Slippery Rock.
