Smith

Jean Harkless Smith, also known as Zelda Jean Harkless, of Kittanning, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023, under the care of Good Samaritan Hospice and Kittanning Health and Rehab Center at the age of 79.

She was born July 14, 1944, in Kittanning. She was the daughter of the late Millard Edward and Dessie Fay (McCanna) Harkless. She delivered mail for years for the Postal Service on a rural route in Kittanning.

Jean is survived by her sons, Dale V. Smith and Randy H. (Sarah) Smith; her siblings, Linda Harkless Stamp of Worthington, Millard E. Harkless Jr. of Sarver and Lori Sue Harkless McLay of Cowansville; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was most fond and proud of her daughter-in-law, Sarah, and loved introducing her to everyone she met.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, William Wilson Harkless and Jack Edward Harkless; and sister, Joan Claypool.

Words she lived by were “I did what I could with what I had.” In her final days, she wanted everyone to know that she loved them.
