Hoszwa

Nicholas Hoszwa, 90, a resident of the Lowrie House and formerly of Acre Avenue, died Wednesday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Ulazow, Ukraine, a son of the late Michael and Katherine Hoszwa. He came to the United States from Poland in 1961.

During World War II, Mr. Hoszwa was a prisoner in a German slave labor camp for six years.

Nicholas worked in the construction department at the Pullman-Standard Car Co. in Butler for 18 years until the plant closed. Before that, he also had worked at the Hot Dog Shop in Butler.

He was a member of St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church in Lyndora.

Nick loved gardening and was known for his tomatoes, and he gladly gave them to his friends and family.

His wife of 50 years, Joanna Lejbik Hoszwa, preceded him in death Feb. 21, 1999.

Surviving are his children and their spouses, Bolek and Marina Hoszwa, Maria and Donald Fischer and Gabriella and Carlos Albert, all of Butler; and two grandchildren, Samuel Hoszwa and Kristen Fischer. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.

Mr. Hoszwa was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

<B>HOSZWA</B> — Friends of Nicholas Hoszwa, who died Wednesday, July 22, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the <B>GEIBEL Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday from St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church in Lyndora with Father George Palick officiating. Interment will follow at Butler County Memorial Park.The bereavement committee of St. Fidelis Parish will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home to conduct a parish vigil service.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
