Lucky Target fundraiser to aid kids, park

EVANS CITY — A fundraising program will provide EDCO Park swim passes and food concession vouchers to disadvantaged youth this summer.

A Lucky Target Shoot at 5 p.m. April 27 at the Conway Sportsmen’s Club in Jackson Township will raise money to buy a day swim pass and a voucher for a hot dog, chips and a drink for the children of those who use the Evans City Food Cupboard.

Envelopes with a pass and voucher will be given in May or June to parents who come for their monthly food allotment at the cupboard, which provides food for needy families in Evans City, Callery, Connoquenessing, Meridian, Renfrew and Forward Township.

The pool program, which is in its third year, was the idea of Wayne Scarborough, secretary at the sportsmen’s club.

“It just came into my brain,” Scarborough said.

He said in the past two years, the event has raised $1,000 to $1,200. He said 100 swim passes and 100 food vouchers were given last year to the food cupboard.

Marilyn McElhinny, volunteer coordinator for the food cupboard, said when parents come into St. Peter’s Lutheran Church to collect their food, she asks them if they have a place to swim in the summer.

She said while some do, most do not. She then asks how many children the person has, and she hands over the small envelopes.

“They are delighted,” McElhinny said. “Lots of times, they say they will save them for a special outing.”

She said in the past two years, the children of all clients received an envelope. If she has some left over, she gives them to larger families the next month. McElhinny said it was particularly thoughtful of the sportsmen’s club to include the food vouchers with the swim passes.

“They could spend the day at the pool and be able to get some nourishment too,” she said.

McElhinny is pleased with Scarborough and all the club members who coordinate the shoot. She said in addition to helping children, the program financially supports EDCO Park by buying the passes and vouchers. “I thought it was just a wonderful, unique idea for the club to do to help the clients at the food cupboard, in addition to helping EDCO Park,” McElhinny said.

Anyone can go to the Lucky Target Shoot at the sportsmen’s club on Magill Road. It will begin at 5 p.m., with sign-up at 4:30 p.m. The shotguns permitted are 12, 16 and 20 gauges, and .410s. The event will also include 50/50 drawings, and prizes.

The club will provide shotguns to those who do not have their own.

Costs vary because participants can compete in one shoot or in all 13. The cost for all 13 shoots is $26.
