JEFFERSON TWP — Defense ruled the night.

A 12-point lead might as well have been 120 as the Mars and Knoch boys basketball teams slugged it out in a huge section matchup Tuesday night.

In the end, the Planets' defense was a little more staunch in a 48-41 win.

"It's exactly what you expect from these two teams," said Mars coach Rob Carmody. "Kids who live 10 minutes apart, closer in some cases, kids who have played against each other since they were little.

"It probably wasn't the prettiest offensive game," Carmody added. "But I think that was because of the intensity."

Points were almost as hard to come by as empty seats in the student sections.

But Mars was able to build a 12-point lead early in the third quarter, which became a big hill for Knoch to climb.

"We had our opportunities in the second half," said Knoch coach Chris Andreassi. "When you get an opportunity, you have to take advantage of it."

The Knights were able to cut the lead to five points with three minutes remaining in the game and had possession.

But Chris Cetnar's 3-pointer rimmed out, then Mars' Christian Locher buried his own 3 from the corner to turn what could have been a two-point game into an eight-point one.

The six-point swing was too much for the Knights to overcome.

Locher, who led Mars with 14 points, has been adept at putting a dagger into the hearts of opponents this season.

"There was that little lull we were in," Carmody said. "Then, all of a sudden, he pops one. What a huge shot for a sophomore in a game like this."

Mars had four players in double digits. Dante DeTillio and Chris Herold each scored 11 points and VinnySmith added 10.

Andreassi can only hope that he finds some of that balance.

Michael Gallagher and Jake McTighe combined for 29 of the Knights' 41 points.

"We need to get scoring from other places," Andreassi said. "Maybe that will be the surprise of the second half because we have some guys here who are excellent shooters. Cetnar, (Kevin) Wood and (Andrew) Wirtz can all shoot the ball. And Cory Miller. We're hoping to get him back soon. He's been out for a month with a concussion. We just need to get those guys going."

Thanks to the defensive effort of DeTillio and Smith, Mars was able to rein in McTighe.

Knoch's big man inside had plenty of opportunities, but the Planets made him earn each one of his 13 points.

"They played him better than most of the teams who have played us lately," Andreassi said.

This game was a huge one for both teams, not just because of the rivalry, but also because of the section standings.

The loser faced the prospect of entering the second half of the section season staring at a 2-4 conference record.

The winner, at 3-3, at least broke even.

"I fully expect Knoch to be there in the end. They'll get better," Carmody said.

Act II will be in February.
