Butler Twp. chimney fire extinguished before damaging home
BUTLER TWP — Firefighters this morning doused a chimney fire on Wendells Lane off Bullcreek Road before the two-story house could be damaged.
Capt. Mike Schmidt of the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department said the fire was in the middle of the chimney at 114 Wendells Lane.
He said debris trapped in the chimney ignited.
No one was injured.
Homeowner Marlin Smith called 911 after discovering the fire.
"I just noticed the chimney was on fire," he said. "I was just looking out the window and saw (too much) smoke. I could hear it roar."
Using a CO2 extinguisher and a positive pressure fan, three firefighters on the roof cleared the chimney.
Schmidt said water typically isn't used on chimney fires because the heated bricks and mortar would crack. He said the wooden frame house didn't even sustain smoke damage.
Following an 8:33 a.m. call, firefighters responded in about 10 minutes.
The Herman and Penn Township volunteer fire departments assisted South Butler.
Two tankers from South Butler and Herman were at the scene to provide a water supply if the fire had spread. There are no fire hydrants in the area.
Butler Ambulance Service also was on standby.
The crews left at 10:12 a.m.
