A car ran into an apartment building at 323 E. Jefferson St. at 12:03 a.m. Saturday.

“The car was going west on Jefferson Street, and (the driver) somehow lost control, went up on the sidewalk and hit the house there at 323,” said Lt. Bob Dougherty of the Butler Fire Department.

Michelle Hays, who lives at the adjoining 325 E. Jefferson St. residence, described the experience.

“I was just laying here and I heard a loud bang,” she said. “I thought (the car) was coming through my wall.”

Hays described the driver as young and a male, and said she heard him tell an EMT that he fell asleep at the wheel.

Hays also said the whole building “shook,” and that upstairs tenants felt the collision. The crash caused damage to her door, so that it can’t shut properly, as well as cracks in her wall.

In the process, the car broke off a gas pipe coming out of the sidewalk that was the main line going into the building.

Firefighters stuffed a rag down the gas pipe to stop the gas leak until Peoples TWP crews arrived. They snapped the pipe off and firefighters stopped the leak with a wooden plug.

Hays said all the people in the buildings had their gas turned off.

The driver of the car was not identified.

There were no injuries.

The car had moderate front end damage and was towed. The front porch had some damage, but no structural damage.

Butler Ambulance and the city police assisted.
