Police: Man shot during home invasion in Butler’s West End

43-year-old facing felony burglary charge

City police said a man was grazed by a bullet after a resident accused him of breaking into a home on Sterling Avenue on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

Butler officers were called to the 300 block of Sterling Avenue around 5 p.m. for a report of a burglary in progress where the resident was holding a man at gunpoint and shots were fired.

Police found a man who lived in the West End neighborhood home holding Nathan Harvey, 43, of Butler, at gunpoint. Harvey had been shot once, and the bullet grazed his abdomen, police said.

Harvey entered the residence through a locked basement door, according to police. The resident told officers he warned Harvey to leave several times, and then fired a warning shot. When Harvey did not leave, the resident told police, he’d shot Harvey.

Police said a woman was also in the home, and neither the man nor the woman knew Harvey. Police did not name either occupant.

Harvey was treated by Butler Ambulance Service and taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a grazing gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was being held for observation at this time for an unrelated issue, according to police.

Harvey was wanted by the Butler County Sheriff’s office, according to Butler police. In addition to those charges, a warrant was filed for felony burglary for Harvey. He will be arrested and arraigned after he’s released from medical care.

Police said it appears no charges will be filed against the man who shot Harvey, and the investigation is still ongoing.
