SV girls nip Shaler, get playoff spot

Erin Danik scored 17 points as the Seneca Valley girls basketball team clinched a playoff spot with a 39-35 win over Shaler on senior night Thursday.

The Raiders (8-12, 4-5) held Shaler (10-9, 2-7) to just seven points in the first half and led 14-7 at the break.

Mars 65, Armstrong 47 — The Planets had four players in double-digits in a section win.

Lauren Wasylson led the way for Mars with 19 points. Tai Johnson added 18, Bella Pelaia 12 and Nicole McCloud 11 for the Planets (14-5, 8-2).

Freeport 50, Deer Lakes 43 — Sidney Shemanski scored 19 points as the Yellowjackets got off to a fast start and cruised to a win.

Freeport (13-7, 8-3) led 31-17 at the half.

Jenna Manke added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Yellowjackets.

Knoch 57, Valley 14 — Casey Kretzer scored 22 points as the Knights rolled.

Carly Burdett added 12 for Knoch (6-13, 4-6), which jumped out to a 38-7 lead at the half and led 21-2 after one quarter.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 83, Highlands 38 — Sam Breen scored 36 points as the Trojanettes rolled to another section win.

North Catholic is now 17-2 overall and 11-0 in the section.

Swimming

Emma Wilson, Will Rastatter and Ben McKnight were multiple winners for Grove City in a sweep of Slippery Rock (120-33 boys and 114-56 girls).

Mari Reott was a multiple winner for the Slippery Rock girls.

Hockey

Freeport’s Robbie Reichenbaugh scored one minute, 58 seconds into overtime to lift the Yellowjackets to a 7-6 victory over Indiana at S&T Bank Arena.

Reichenbaugh tallied four goals and two assists in the game. His third goal gave Freeport a 5-2 lead with 6:06 remaining in the second period. Indiana then netted four of the next five scores to force the extra period.

Also scoring for the Yellowjackets (7-8) were Kyle Hazelett, Alex Colflesh and Cameron Speakman.

Morgan Penn tallied 50 saves in net to earn the win. Indiana outshot the ‘Jackets 56-26.

Butler 3, Pine-Richland 3 — Josh McGowan, Brandon Holt and Jerome Oliver Jr. each scored for the Golden Tornado and Nick Farmerie registered 22 saves at Baierl Ice Complex.

It is the second consecutive 3-3 tie for Butler (6-8-3), which battled North Allegheny to a stalemate on Monday.

Cathedral Prep 5, Seneca Valley 2 — The Ramblers scored three goals in the third period to pull away at Mercyhurst College Ice Center.

After a scoreless first period, both teams scored twice in the second, with SV’s goals credited to Reese Garvin and Robert Sheils.

Dylan Sloat shouldered the loss after making 32 saves for the Raiders (9-8-1).

Private Schools

Michaella Roth scored 13 points, grabbed four rebounds, had four steals and six assists, but the First Baptist Christian girls basketball team dropped a 37-33 decision to Cheswick.

Alexis Barnhart had 11 points, 14 rebounds and five steals in the loss while Katelyn Gavinski had seven points.
