Steelers pare roster to 53 players

The Steelers traded former starting center Kendrick Green and cut two other veterans — tight end Zach Gentry and safety Tre Norwood — to reduce their roster to the mandatory 53-player limit on Tuesday.

Green, a third-round choice in 2021 who started 15 games as a rookie, was traded to the Houston Texans for a sixth-round choice in 2025. Green never dressed for a game in 2022 after the team moved him to guard.

Gentry, who entered his fifth season after being a fifth-round draft choice in 2019, became expendable with the development of rookie Darnell Washington, the team’s third-round draft choice.

Norwood, who started six games the past two seasons, was cut in favor of Elijah Riley, who can also play nickelback.

The most curious decision was the Steelers electing to keep two punters, at least for now. Free agent Braden Mann was kept along with incumbent Pressley Harvin III, but that could only mean a future move is imminent.

The other cuts were: CBs Luq Barcoo and Chris Wilcox, defensive linemen Breiden Fehoko and Jonathan Marshall, linebackers Nick Kwiatkoski, David Perales and Quincy Roche, center/guard Ryan McCollum, running backs Greg Bell and Xazavian Valladay, tight end Rodney Williams, receivers Dez Fitzpatrick and Jordan Byrd and safety Trenton Thompson.
