Garden market slated

The Penn State Master Gardeners of Butler County will host a Spring Garden Market, Plant Sale and Workshop on from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 21 at the Succop Conservancy.

The garden market will feature a wide variety of garden vendors, crafts and food. New this year is a silent auction with bidding ending at 12:30 p.m. The plant sale gives you the opportunity to buy plants from a Master Gardener's garden.

The workshop speakers will be Mary Joy Haywood, president of the Botanical Society of Western Pennsylvania, Les Hillyard of Patty's Daylilies, and Nelda Burd, an associate master at the Ichiyo School.

Harwood will talk about "Diagnosing Plant Diseases." Hillyard will discuss "Daylilies in the Garden," and Burd will talk about "Ikebana."

Pre-registration is strongly recommended since space is limited. The workshop fee is $10.

Haywood also will be selling her book, "Wildflowers of Pennsylvania," after her presentation. Proceeds will benefits the botanical society.

A free guided tour of the herb garden will be held at 10 am and a walking tour of the grounds will be held at noon. Admission is free and parking is $2 per car.

The conservancy is located on Airport Road at Route 8, five miles south of Butler.

The conservancy property was given to the Butler County Community College Education Foundation in 2001 to establish an environmental and cultural education center for the community. The 50-acre property features two houses, a barn, a cottage and outbuildings nestled in a meadow with two ponds, walking trails and gardens.
