SV makes state VB semifinals
YORK — The idea that Seneca Valley volleyball coach Karen Martini was washing her team's uniforms late Friday night was a good thing.
It meant her team would play another day.
Not just any day, but Saturday, when the SV would compete in the PIAA Class AAA semifinals for the first time.
On Friday, the Raiders swept all three of their matches in pool play at Central York High. In doing so, the squad advanced to the semifinal round, where it was slated to play District 3 champion Hempfield at 11:40 a.m.
Upper Merion and Dover will compete in the other semifinal. The championship game was scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Seneca Valley (24-4) defeated Mount St. Joseph 28-26, 25-20, 25-22, Dover 25-22, 25-20, 26-24 and Avon Grove 25-22, 25-10, 25-22.
“We did our homework on all the teams,” said Martini. “I knew if we got Mount St. Joseph and Dover right away, we could get to Saturday.
“I felt like the girls did a good job, but didn't come out as hard against Mount St. Joseph. I think they were more nervous than anything,” Martini added.
In the three matches, Meghan Drambel had 39 kills and Cate Seman 38 kills. Alex Karika added nine service aces and Alyssa DiMaria had 72 digs.
No matter the outcome in the first match against Mount. St. Joseph, Martini was adamant it wouldn't affect them the rest of the night.
“We talked more about every time we'd go from game to game, win or lose, we threw it out the door,” said Martini. “We still had so many games left.”
Dover grabbed the other semifinal berth from Pool E play by going 2-1.
In Pool F, Upper Merion went 3-0 and Hempfield 2-1 to get the other two semifinals spots, leaving Pine-Richland (1-2) and Unionville (0-3) out of the mix.
The Raiders did play Hempfield earlier in the season, when the took a 2-1 victory at the Garden Spot Invitational Sept. 11.
Oddly enough, it was Pine-Richland who handed the Raiders all four of their losses this season, including the WPIAL championship, 3-1.
“The girls had wanted to play them again so bad and came close,” said Martini.
