Raiders' comeback spoiled in overtime loss
WARRENDALE - Seneca Valley proved it could come from behind.
But the Raiders didn't get a chance to answer Pittsburgh Central Catholic's final goal.
Vikings forward Charlie Burke scored on a rebound, beating Seneca Valley goalie Jeff Reed just 17 seconds into overtime as Central Catholic grabbed a 4-3 high school ice hockey win Tuesday at Warrendale Blade Runners.
Reed made an initial stop on Chris Urso's wrist shot, but the puck was deflected to Burke, who put it in the wide open left side of the net.
The Raiders forced the overtime period by overcoming a 3-1 deficit in the third period.
Justin Ball scored a power play goal with 8:39 left in regulation before Joey Sasala tied the game on a slap shot from just inside the blue line with 6:06 remaining.
In the closing minutes of regulation, the Raiders (2-2) had several chances to take the lead, but Central Catholic goalie Bob Magyarics proved to be up to the challenge.
Magyarics recorded 14 saves, while Reed made 19 stops in defeat for the Raiders.
"Our kids worked hard in the third period, battling back to tie the game," said Seneca Valley coach Mike Schall. "(Reed) made some nice saves to keep us in it."
"I can't say I'm happy with giving up a two-goal lead," said Vikings coach Kevin Zielmanski. "But we've got a pretty young team and I think this overtime win will help its confidence."
The Raiders' lone goal in the first two periods was scored by forward Kevin Raynovich with 9:26 left in the second period.
The goal cut the Vikings' lead to 2-1, but Central Catholic (2-3-1) pushed its lead back to two scores when Josh Martin found the net just four minutes later.
Seneca Valley, which had tallied just eight shots on goal in the first two periods combined, pelted Magyarics with nine shots in the third period.
"It's hard to explain our play in the first two periods," said Schall. "It was like we were just out there going through the motions. But we played very well in the third period."
"I didn't see (Seneca Valley) doing anything different on offense in the third period," said Zielmanski. "They were just winning the races to the loose pucks.
"Plus, we were forced to kill several penalties," added Zielmanski. "We had to kill two 5-on-3s in that third period. That helped their offense generate a few more scoring chances."
Urso and John Buczkowski scored Central Catholic's first two goals in the first and second period, respectively.
The Raiders will face Shaler Friday at Warrendale Blade Runners.
