Raynovich's hat trick keys SV win over Kiski Area

WARRENDALE - Seneca Valley is hoping to finish the season on a roll and receive a better seeding in the upcoming PIHL Class AAA hockey playoffs.

Tuesday's game against Kiski Area certainly helped them continue some momentum as they eye the postseason.

Kevin Raynovich recorded a hat trick to help the Raiders to a 7-1 victory over the Cavaliers at BladeRunners.

The game was called with eight minutes remaining because of the 10:10 p.m. curfew.

The game also was marred by an ejection, fighting and saw the Cavaliers pulling their team off the ice with 11:25 remaining.

The players returned several minutes later and played the final three-plus minutes before the game was called because of the time.

"Frustration set in on all levels," said Seneca Valley coach Mike Schall. "I've never seen anything like it before. I would have liked to finish the game because it was Senior Night.

"It's not a positive memory, but they got a game they won't forget," he added.

"It was a miserable game for us from start to finish," said Cavaliers coach Jeff Horvath. "You can't play the game and not have the officials make calls. There was so much cheap stuff."

The Raiders (9-13) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Mike McChesney scored past Kiski starting goalie Brian McLaughlin with 9:27 left in the first period.

Kiski's Mark Peppler scored the equalizer with 7:02 left in the period before the Raiders re-took the lead when Raynovich scored before a late penalty call just 36 seconds later.

Raynovich was on a breakaway but a Cavaliers defender hooked him just before the net. However, Raynovich was able to score.

"We had a breakdown when they scored, but our guys are good at re-grouping," said Schall. "They responded well to that."

When Seneca Valley's Brent Tranter followed up with a goal just inside the post from the right side, the Raiders enjoyed a 3-1 advantage after the first period.

Kiski (2-18-2) switched goalies in the second period, going with Luke Mohammed, but that didn't slow the Raiders.

Raynovich tallied the next two goals in the first 4:11, the latter on a power play attempt, for a 5-1 lead.

"That was nice for Kevin," said Schall. "He works hard and doesn't take a shift off."

Seneca Valley's Matt Jarrett scored a power-play goal with 3:41 left in the period and Caleb Hudspath added another score with 45 seconds left in what proved to be the final goal of the night.

The Raiders were coming off a 3-0 victory over Erie Cathedral Prep last Friday after a three-game stretch that saw them lose to Erie McDowell (7-2), Bethel park (9-0) and Upper St. Clair (7-1).

"We got back on track," said Schall. "We've got two more to go (at Franklin Regional Thursday and home against State College Feb. 25) and those games we want to move up for position."

Notes:

Jeff Reed made 10 stops for the Raiders in net while McLaughlin and Mohammed combined for 21 for Kiski. … The Cavaliers were coming off a 5-2 win over State College last Thursday. The team's only other win was a 1-0 forfeit win over Hempfield earlier this season.
