SV's Reed stonewalls State College in 4-0 win
WARRENDALE - Talk about irony.
In the waning moments of the Seneca Valley hockey team's game against State College, a struggle for possession landed a Lions player in the Raiders' net.
Unfortunately for State College, the puck never got that far all night.
Seneca Valley junior goaltender Jeff Reed stopped all 24 shots he faced, helping the Raiders to a 4-0 shutout win in their regular-season finale Friday at BladeRunners.
"Jeff did a great job tonight," said Seneca Valley coach Mike Schall. "He gave us a chance early in the game. This was definitely one of his better games this season."
"I thought the key was their goaltender came up with some big saves early," said State College coach Allen Wilson. "We had several opportunities, but we just couldn't get that first goal, and that was big."
After a scoreless first period, Reed stonewalled the Lions' attack with 10 saves in the second frame while the Raiders' offense came alive following a roughing penalty on State College.
With 4:11 elapsed in the period, Matt Jarrett's shot was stopped by State College goalie Tyler Gearhart before Seneca Valley's Caleb Hudspath scored on the rebound.
Just eight seconds later, Jarrett set up John Raymus for the Raiders' second goal.
"Starting out slow has been a problem this year for us," said Schall. "But tonight we got after it as the game wore on. That's when we began to get the good scoring opportunities."
The Lions managed to pelt Reed with a flurry of shots over the last five minutes of the second period, but he proved to be up to the challenge each time.
"I'd say this was my most solid performance this year," said Reed. "I probably had to make five tough saves tonight. Our defense played very well in front of me."
Though a 2-0 lead was in Reed's capable hands, the Raiders tallied two more scores in the final period.
Brent Tranter, SV's leading goal scorer with 17 entering the game, scored on a breakaway with 8:18 left, placing the puck over Gearhart's left shoulder.
Jarrett followed with a score with 5:17 remaining on a pass from Travis Sharrar.
Gearhart ended with 21 saves for the Lions.
The Raiders (10-14) now await their seeding in the PIHL playoffs.
