Butler parade set for Thursday

The annual Butler Veteran's Day Parade will be held on Main Street in Butler starting at 10:40 a.m. Thursday.

The parade is organized by Butler County Veterans Services and will have veterans represented from Korea, Vietnam and other wars with U.S. involvement.

According to a release from Veterans Services, the Veteran of the Year is Dave Walker, a Sergeant First Class and Purple Heart recipient who served in the Army on active duty from 1949 to 1973. Walker received the Purple Heart after being wounded by shrapnel on the day he was to leave Vietnam. He will be riding in a car in the parade on Thursday.

According to John Cyprian, director of Veterans Services, the parade will pause at 11 a.m. to observe the Armistice. He said organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, and various first responder's vehicles will be participating in the parade. High school bands, including Butler High School's Marching Band, will be featured, too.

The parade will begin at the intersection of North Main and Penn streets in Butler and head south down North Main Street to Diamond Park. Cyprian said it's an exciting event to attend.

“After being cooped up last year, this is a nice event to support your local veterans,” Cyprian said.
