Mary Jo Kelly-Ferson
Mary Jo Kelly-Ferson, 67, of Prospect, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, surrounded by her family.
Mary Jo and her identical twin sister were born in Homestead on Oct. 4, 1955, to James and Margaret (Hughes) Kelly. She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1973 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Clarion University and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Hawaii.
She spent her career in education and social work, retiring from the Midwestern Pennsylvania Intermediate Unit IV, where she always advocated fiercely for her families.
She met her husband of 39 years, Mike, through the Pittsburgh Ski Club. Mary Jo and Mike had a son, Peter, and the family continued to enjoy skiing and annual trips to Vail, Colo. Mary Jo also loved anything outdoors, including kayaking, horseback riding and cycling. She ran several marathons with her sister.
Mary Jo was an avid bargain shopper and her family and friends were regular recipients of her generosity. She loved to travel, especially to Ireland. More than anything, Mary Jo loved her family and cherished time spent with her great-nieces and great-nephews, who adored her.
She was the loving sister of Mary Ann (Bill) Raymer, James Kelly (Rob Mangel), twin sister Michele (Jack) Klingler and Margaret (John — deceased) Stoeff; loving aunt to Kelly (Joe) Schulter, Mike (Marissa) Ferson, Sarah (Brad) Susa, Johnny Stoeff, Kelly (Wayne) Fleming, Mike (Rupal) Klingler, James Frankie Polston and Amber Marshall; and loving great-aunt to Evelyn, Alex, Rory, Marleigh, Genevieve, Nicholas and Otto.
