A work in progress

Seneca Valley's Kelsey Spencer tries to wrest the ball away from a Hampton player as teammate Kelsey Patsilevas applies pressure Monday in the Raiders' 42-31 victory over the Talbots.
Raiders a little ragged, but they still beat Talbots

JACKSON TWP — The record remains perfect, but the Seneca Valley girls basketball team still has some kinks to work out as it prepares for Section 3-AAAA play later this month.

The Raiders (3-0) committed 25 turnovers and were outrebounded 19-8 in the second half, but they came away with a 42-31 win over visiting Hampton Monday night.

"We were just careless with the ball," Seneca Valley coach Kelly Mathews said. "We don't value our possessions. A lot of our turnovers weren't forced. We caused a lot of them ourselves."

As frustrating as the turnovers were for the victorious Raiders, Hampton turned the ball over 26 times and went home with an overall record of 0-2.

The Talbots' nine turnovers in the first quarter helped the Raiders build an 18-5 lead in the period.

SV hit four 3-pointers in the quarter — two by Kelsey Spencer, one by Jackie Mangola and the other by sophomore guard Aly Eagle as time expired in the period.

"Hampton was setting in a zone in the first quarter and there were plenty of jump shots to be had," said Mathews. "But in the second quarter, we stopped making the outside shots. I was a bit disappointed in the team because I wanted to see them penetrate the gaps."

Despite scoring only five points in the second period, the Raiders limited the Talbots to just three points and led 23-8 at intermission.

"We've got a young team," said Hampton coach Mary Bukovac. "Our two guards that controlled the tempo graduated last year."

The Talbots found the basket more often in the second half, but Mangola scored eight of her game-high 16 points in the final two quarters to keep her team's lead a comfortable one.

The Raiders led 36-20 after three quarters.

Mangola is averaging 12.6 points after three games following a sophomore season that saw her score .7 points off the bench.

"Jackie's been a key for us so far," said Mathews. "She can play anywhere on the floor and plays well defensively. She does a little bit of everything for us."

Spencer added 11 points for the Raiders.

Junior forward Jodie Luther led the Talbots with 11 points, 10 of them coming in the second half.

"It's hard to dig yourself out of a hole like we had tonight," said Bukovac.
