Four quarters aren't enough for these guys.

For the third straight PIAA playoff game, the Grove City HighSchool boys basketball team needed some extra time to dispatch its foe.

This time, it was Susquehanna Township that succumbed in the extra period as the Eagles moved on to the PIAA Class AAA semifinals with a 53-48 win Saturday night at Somerset Area HighSchool.

"Success breeds success," said Grove City coach DonFee. "The more we get in those situations and the more we are successful in them, the more confidence we get that we are going to pull it out."

The Eagles have played five overtime periods in their three state playoff games.

It didn't look like they were going to make it to another overtime Saturday.

Grove City trailed by eight points late in the fourth quarter against the Indians (25-5), but stormed back to force a tie at the end of regulation.

In overtime, the Eagles were 9-of-14 from the free throw line to secure the win.

Susquehanna Township's top three scorers, Matt Jones, Austin Cook and Kirk Peters, all fouled out in overtime.

The key, Fee said, was the defensive effort.

"We mixed up our man and zone defenses," Fee said. "We knew one of their weaknesses was outside shooting, so we played a looser zone and tried to take away their penetration."

Grove City (26-4) also rebounded well, particularly on the defensive boards.

"We limited our turnovers and we limited their second chances," Fee said.

Danny Keil paced the Eagles with 19 points. After a disappointing performance in the district playoffs, Keil has come up big in the state tournament.

"He's gotten his confidence back," Fee said. "He's running the floor, playing good defense and he's mixing up his shots. He's been great for us."

Grove City, which will play in its firstWestern Final since 1970, will get a shot at an old nemesis in General McLane.

The Lancers ended Oliver's Cinderella run with a 73-53 triumph Friday night.

General McLane beat Grove City 62-41 in the District 10 championship game March 2.

This meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Edinboro University.

Grove City is hoping a different kind of history repeats itself.

Last season, General McLane beat Franklin in the district championship game, only to lose to it in the Western Final.

"We said that after we lost in the district final," Fee said. "We put up the brackets from last season when Franklin beat McLane and we told them it is possible."

But the Lancers are playing at their best now. They've won their three state playoff games by an average margin of 20 points.

General McLane has two outstanding guards in Drew Astorino and Bobby Stauffer and a big-time post presence in Shawn Walker, who hit all 10 of his shots the last time the Lancers played the Eagles.

"They are an outstanding basketball team," Fee said. "They are very talented. On paper, they definitely out-man us. But on any given night, anyone can be beat. We are playing with renewed confidence."
