Butler resident has 1st film screened at LA festivals

Jonathan Stark practices WCMX, a sport akin to skateboarding for wheelchair users, in this action shot from Butler resident Nathan Osche's documentary film “Throne.”

Filmmaker and Butler resident Nathan Osche has had his first film screened at Los Angeles film festivals.

The film “Throne,” a short documentary which he directed and produced, was screened at the Action On Film international film festival in Monrovia, Calif., in August.

“Throne” also was screened at other festivals including the LA Indie Film Fest in October, at which it was nominated for best film, and at the Los Angeles Lift-Off Film Festival.

The 12-minute film follows the story of Jonathan Stark, a paraplegic who participates in WCMX, akin to skateboarding for wheelchair users.

Stark was in a near fatal accident in 2009 on his way to school. In the film, Jon explains his dream of landing a wheelchair backflip.

The short film won the Grand Jury Prize at Carnegie Mellon University’s Shot for Shot film festival and was selected for screening in the Point Park University Cinema showcase at the Directors Guild of America Theater in Hollywood, Calif.

The documentary started out with a half-hour run time, but was edited down for the festival submissions.

“We did the film during one semester, fall to Christmastime, from production to very end, in the first semester of my senior year (of college),” Osche said.

“Between 200 and 300 hours went into making the film, between production, traveling, editing, and editing even more,” he said.

Osche has been living in Butler since graduating from Point Park in 2014 with a bachelor’s in cinema arts.

He said he’s been doing a lot of his own video work and commercials for different companies and did some work as a production assistant with the Will Smith movie “Concussion.”

The 2010 Butler High School alum plans to start a new documentary in March, starring Pittsburgh native and professional BMX racer Kyle McRory.

“It’s exciting. I grew up favoring the documentary side,” Osche said. “I enjoy telling real stories ... It gives me a gratifying feeling.”

Once production is done, maybe by end of summer, he hopes to make the move to California.

The film “Throne” was released to public at the end of 2014, and can be seen for free on Vimeo.com by doing a search for Throne 2014.
