Freeport frosh makes states in 3 events
PITTSBURGH - Andrea McQueen's efforts were not only good performances to build upon, they proved to be good enough for the PIAA swimming championships as well.
The Freeport freshman took second place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.39 seconds and fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.95 at the WPIAL Class AA swimming championships Friday at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool.
Add to that her role in the team's fourth-place 200 medley relay on Thursday with Gail Erickson, Kristen Bombalski and Lauren Palko, and it add up to three appearances for McQueen in the state meet later this month.
"I was a bit nervous and didn't know if I was going to do well, but I ended up swimming well," McQueen said following her performance in the 100 freestyle.
Freeport's girls ended up in eighth place in the team standings with 79 points.
"I'm elated after the performance of the whole team," said Freeport coach Gregg McQueen. "What more can you ask for out of a team with (five) swimmers."
Freeport's Brendan McGregor finished second in the 100 backstroke (54.28), a title he won in 2004.
McGregor lost his crown by a mere .13 seconds to Adam Collins of Laurel Highlands.
Mars sophomore Jeff Gavin followed a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle Thursday with another fifth-place in the 500 freestyle in 5:07.47.
"The 200 (freestyle) went as I expected, but I was hoping to finish under five minutes in the 500," said Gavin.
The Planets took sixth place in the boys standings with 85 points.
Knoch junior Bethany Legin broke her own school record in the 500 freestyle with a 13th-place time of time of 5:38.16. The previous mark was 5:43.96.

Freeport's girls 400 freestyle relay team of Palko, Lindsay Jordan, Erickson and McQueen finished in seventh place with a time of 3:51.72. … Knoch's boys 400 freestyle relay team took ninth place with a mark of 3:38.70 … The PIAA Class AA swimming and diving championships will be held March 16 and 17 at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium in Lewisburg.
