Riding for the Cure event to take place Saturday

Local charity organization Riding for the Cure is in its 12th year helping cancer patients within Butler County.

It aims to continue that at its annual Riding for the Cure event July 29.

According to organization president Lynda Kerr, the event raised $38,000 last year, with the hopes to reach closer to $50,000 this time around, in order to continue its mission in helping cancer patients with expenses that insurance does not cover.

"To me it's the community helping the community,“ Kerr said. ”What we are all about is we raise money for cancer patients in the community. It's whatever the patient needs like their co-pays paid, medications or whatever they need, the patient gets."

Drivers and passengers can register for the event the morning of the event.

Registration runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the 11th Frame Bar and Grille, 540 Fairground Hill Road in Butler.

The cost of registration is $20 for the driver and $10 for the passenger.

All the money from the registration fee goes toward paying the expenses of cancer patients.

"Kickstands go up at 11 a.m. and we will go down Main Street,“ Kerr said. ”We encourage people to stand on Main Street to cheer the bikers on. From there we are going up to the Belmont with a couple other stops.“

The final stop for the event will be at the Beer Garden, 2399 Oneida Valley Road in Petrolia for the after party and dinner Kerr said.

At the Beer Garden there will be a Chinese auction, tons of food, a 50-50 raffle and a DJ.

All the after party activities are included with the registration fee.

“Our highest we had one year was 350 bikes, but it depends on weather and other events in the area,” Kerr said.

Kerr said people are also invited to ride along in cars if they don’t have bikes, or they can join the after party at the Beer Garden for $10.

Those interested in donating to Riding for the Cure can send funds to Riding for the Cure, P.O. Box 624, Butler, PA 16001.

"Every little bit helps,“ Kerr said. ”Whatever we can do for the cancer patients, that's what we are here for."

People interested in volunteering for the event can reach out to Kerr at 724-355-2456, they can send a message to the organization’s Facebook page, titled Riding For The Cure.
