Free backpacks containing school supplies will be available Sunday, July 30, to students preparing for the upcoming first day of classes at area schools.

Verizon in Bon Aire Plaza on Route 8 in Butler Township will hold its School Rock Backpack Giveaway starting at 1 p.m. and lasting until all backpacks have been distributed.

Parents and students are invited to pick up a backpack that includes pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, a ruler and glue.

Since the program began 11 years ago, more than 1.3 million backpacks have been given to children across the U.S. ahead of the upcoming academic year.
