EAST FRANKLIN TWP, Armstrong County — A suspect accused of a one-man crime spree was captured Monday after escaping custody from ACMH Hospital and stealing a pickup truck, authorities said.

Alan-Michael C. Taylor, 23, of Vandergrift, who apparently fled the hospital shoeless around 6 a.m., was nabbed about three hours later at his mother's house, according to state police.

He is facing 11 criminal charges — including five felonies — and is being held in the Armstrong County Jail on $50,000 bail.

In one of the crimes, he allegedly assaulted and injured a trooper.

State police started looking for Taylor about 4:10 a.m. Monday after they say he violated a protection from abuse order in North Apollo. He later was involved in a suspected driving under the influence-related crash in Kiski Township.

While police were investigating the crash, according to court documents, Taylor shoved Trooper Peter Schultz, who fell backward and severely sprained his left ankle.

The defendant ran off with Schultz giving chase. The officer twice Tasered the suspect but to no avail.

Police said Taylor eventually stopped and turned toward Schultz. The trooper was able to get the defendant on the ground and hold him until his partner arrived to help.

The suspect was taken to ACMH Hospital for treatment of injuries. Schultz, too, was treated there for possible torn ligaments in his ankle.

But while at the hospital, Taylor fled the emergency room. He was wearing a T-shirt, sweat pants and “socks only,” according to a be-on-the-lookout advisory sent out to area police departments.

The BOLO advised Buffalo Township police in Butler County that the escapee could be headed there but it was not immediately known why.

Police said they believe that after leaving the hospital, the defendant broke into a vehicle at a home on Route 356 in North Buffalo Township, stealing $70 in currency and an electronic cigarette.

He walked to a nearby construction site on Country Club Lane and stole a Ford F250, documents said. He allegedly drove it to his mother's house in Vandergrift and told her he had stolen the truck.

He vowed he would “kill himself before he goes to jail,” police said.

Shortly before 9 a.m., police arrested Taylor without incident at his mother's home. Police eventually recovered the stolen truck at Vandergrift Cemetery.

During his interview at the Kittanning barracks, documents said, Taylor “apologized for everything that happened overnight.” He also acknowledged that he has an “alcohol problem.”

District Judge Gary Decomo arraigned him on three counts of aggravated assault and one count each of theft and escape, all felonies.

He also is charged with misdemeanor counts of DUI, simple assault, theft by unlawful taking, theft from a vehicle, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Additionally, he is charged with a pair of summary violations for harassment and failing to stop and give information or render aid after an accident.
