Daylight saving time bill moves on to state Senate

The state’s House of Representatives passed a bill Monday asking Congress to make daylight saving time permanent.

The bill originally passed the House State Government Committee by a vote of 23-2 before passing on the floor and it now moves to the state Senate for consideration. The bill was sponsored by Republican Ryan Mackenzie of Lehigh County, and he argued that the time change is unnecessary.

“House Bill 335 would allow Pennsylvania to recognize permanent daylight saving time if Congress allows us to do this,” Mackenzie said. “In the future, I think this is a very positive reform for Pennsylvania. Changing time twice a year is incredibly inefficient and an outdated process.”

All of the local elected representatives including Marci Mustello, R-11th; Aaron Bernstine, R-10th; Timothy Bonner, R-8th, and Daryl Metcalfe, R-12th, voted in favor of the bill.

With the House bill, Pennsylvania joins 15 other states that passed legislation seeking this change that is currently not allowed by federal law.
