RIDGWAY — Part of a 103-year-old bridge being rebuilt in central Pennsylvania collapsed Thursday, injuring three workers, said emergency and construction officials.

The collapse occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in the northbound lane of the North Broad Street Bridge, which carries U.S. Route 219 over Elk Creek in Ridgway, about 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, said Marla Fannin, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The southbound lane of the bridge was open at the time but no motorists or passenger vehicles were believed to be on the bridge when it collapsed, she said.

Fire Chief Scott Pontious said one worker was being flown to a hospital in nearby St. Marys.
