Electronics disposal event set for Sept. 13

CRANBERRY TWP — The township will again offer residents the chance to dispose of old electronics for free, equipment that will then be donated to charity.

The next opportunity for residents to recycle their old computers, printers, cell phones and other electronics will be at the public works operations facility behind Community Park. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 13.

Lorin Meeder, the environmental programs coordinator for the township, said most electronics will be accepted, although not television sets.

Meeder said the township usually offers the program twice a year for residents.

The program is mutually beneficial for residents and the township alike, being that officials will donate all of the electronics to Goodwill. Employees at Goodwill will then sift through the material to determine what can be refurbished and what has to be recycled.

“We don’t want to see those electronic components going into landfills anymore so we’re making sure we have some place to put them,” he said.

Meeder said the township has offered the program for at least the last five years, and he added officials often see a great response by residents.

He expects more than 150 cars to come with old electronics and added township officials collect about 25,000 pounds of electronics per year.

In another recycling event, residents are also welcome to turn in unused or expired medications for safe disposal.

The event is part of the nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Sept. 27. Residents can drop off their unused or expired medications in the rear parking lot of the municipal center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
