Foxes' outside game too much for Raiders

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley's offense struggled all night while Fox Chapel was on fire from the outside.

That's not exactly a recipe for success for the Raiders.

The Foxes drained 10 3-point goals, including eight in the first half, as the visitors gained a 56-32 win in a Section 3-AAAA affair at Seneca Valley High Tuesday night.

Fox Chapel's perimeter game was not lost on SV coach Victor Giannotta. He saw the Foxes make 11 trifectas in his team's 66-51 loss on Dec. 20.

"We came at them tonight with a trapping zone, but we couldn't score to set up our press," Giannotta said.

After scoring 12 points in the opening quarter, the Raiders managed just 20 points the rest of the way, including only four field goals.

"We did a good job of limiting (SV) to one shot tonight," said Fox Chapel coach Ben O'Connor. "We kept telling our players to contest their jumpers and to rebound."

The Foxes (11-6, 6-3) set the tone for the game early on the offensive end of the court.

Junior guard Seth Eisner, who compiled a game-high 21 points, scored 11 of them in the opening period, including nine on three 3-pointers.

"Our defensive intensity tonight was poor at best," said Giannotta. "I'll take half of the responsibility for this loss. But the other half is due to the effort on the court."

Of the Foxes' first nine field goals, seven of them came from beyond the arc. With 5:50 left in the first half, the Raiders faced a 20-12 deficit.

"We've had games this season in which we've hit more than 10 three-pointers," said O'Connor. "And we've also had games where we hit just one or two.

"Coming into the season, people labeled us as a team that could only shoot the 3," he added. "But we made a commitment to do whatever it takes to win. We take whatever the defense gives us."

SV stayed close and trailed just 25-20 with 3:30 left in the second quarter.

But that's when Fox Chapel reeled off a 9-1 run to lead 34-21 at intermission.

Both teams struggled to score in the third period, and the Foxes' lead after three periods was a comfortable one at 45-30.

Any chance for a Seneca Valley comeback was dashed by the team's shooting woes. The Raiders (6-12, 1-8) missed their first eight attempts from the field in the final quarter and scored only two points in the period.

For the game, SV made 13-of-45 shots from the field for 29 percent.

Gabe Grinder was SV's lone player to reach double digits with 14 points.
