Challenging the W.Va. trails

Although I missed last Saturday’s Butler Road Race, sometimes you just have to get away.

Instead of pounding pavement at home, I challenged the wilds of West Virginia trails with nine other local runners at New River Gorge Trail Festival.

New River Gorge is the nation’s newest national park with 7,000 acres of scenic beauty along the oldest, deepest and longest river gorge in the Appalachians and views of longest single-span arch bridge in the western hemisphere.

As Andrew Mascio, co-owner of Wolf Creek Race Management says, “We’re always looking for scenic destinations. As soon as it became a national park, we knew we wanted to hold an event there.”

Evidently, runners also want to go to an event there as participation has more than tripled from fewer than 100 finishers in 2021 in the 5k and half marathon to more than 300 this year. In 2022, the event added a 50k to the distance choices.

With all the available options, there was a distance to satisfy all of the runners in my group. Most chose to run the 5k on Friday evening. While a few ran only the half marathon on Saturday, most of the 5k runners also ran the half marathon, a Bridge Double. And one chose to double by running 5k and 30k. Among this year’s 307 total finishers, 60 chose to double.

As interest grows, Andrew says Wolf Creek must be creative in planning to keep the event safe and enjoyable. For example, this year’s 5k changed from an out-and-back to a point-to-point course. This lessened crowding and introduced a challenging technical climb to the single-track course with 500 feet of elevation gain and more than 700 feet of loss.

Changes to the half marathon and 50k courses this year made them more run-able and scenic. The half marathon includes rhododendron tunnels, views of the New River Gorge Bridge and several waterfalls and long, easy miles on the packed gravel Craig Branch Road. The 50k includes two loops of the half marathon course with an extra out-and-back along the rim of the gorge.

New River Gorge is a beautiful place to run, but it’s not all about the scenery. Competitive awards in all distances include custom medals for top three male and female overall and masters finishers and top three in age groups from 18-29 through 60+.

All finishers earn a custom designed medal. In addition, all finishers in the Bridge Double (5k on Friday, half marathon or 50k on Saturday) receive a special medal. Andrew says that all their medals are designed in-house and feature themes of their locations.

Our group sported a lot of New River Gorge bling at our post-race celebration. The host town of Fayetteville is a hub for outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking on world class whitewater. And when friends are finished expending energy outdoors, they want to relive it over food and beers.

Andrew recommends looking over their website, wolfcreektrackclub.com, for ideas to make the most of destination runs. He says they like to include information about the area including history, other activities, food and lodging along with race information.

Wolf Creek Race Management conducts destination events as far away as Hot Springs, Arkansas and are investigating an event in Utah for the future. But they also stage several events in PA including Beaver County’s Rabid Racoon Trail Races, Old Turnpike Half Marathon in Waterfall which runs on an abandoned section of PA Turnpike and through two tunnels and Lake Wilhelm Marathon and Half Marathon on the shores of Maurice K. Goddard State Park near Sandy Lake.

Their next event is Kinzua Half Marathon and 5k, July 29 and 30 in Mt. Jewett. The events start and finish at Kinzua Bridge State Park Skywalk, one of the world’s top viewpoints, and run out and back on scenic Knox Kane Rail Trail.
