Pirates get pitcher from L.A. Dodgers

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-handed pitcher Andre Jackson from the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash considerations on Sunday.

Jackson has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. Infielder Mark Mathias has been designated for assignment to make room for Jackson on the 40-man roster. Jackson, 27, is 1-1 with a 5.86 earned run average and 31 strikeouts in 11 appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season.

He appeared in seven games for the Dodgers this season, collecting two saves and posting a 6.62 ERA with 16 strikeouts.

Pittsburgh Maulers in USFL title game

CANTON, Ohio — The Pittsburgh Maulers advanced to the USFL championship game with a 31-27 overtime win over the Michigan Panthers Saturday night in Canton, Ohio.

Quarterback Troy Williams completed 23 of 40 passes for 201 yards, including as 6-yard touchdown pass with 39 seconds left in regulation that gave the Maulers (5-6) a 27-24 lead. Michigan (4-7) forced overtime with a late field goal.

The Maulers won their third straight game by converting a pair of two-point conversions in overtime and stopping Michigan twice. Former Pitt kicker Chris Blewitt booted a 59-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter for the winners.

The USFL Championship Game is next weekend.
