Three Butler County volleyball teams will be involved in WPIAL playoff action today.

In Class AAA, Seneca Valley hosts Ringgold at 7:30 p.m.

In Class AA, Knoch travels to South Fayette at 7:30 p.m. while Mars plays Quaker Valley at 6 at Blackhawk.

Two Butler County soccer teams will be involved in a WPIAL playoff doubleheader Saturday at Mount Lebanon.Seneca Valley's girls face Southmoreland in a Class AAA game at 1 p.m. The Mars boys take on Southmoreland in a Class AA game at 3.

BUTLER TWP — The 2009 Butler County Community College women's volleyball team has become the third athletic team from the school to reach a national tournament.The Pioneers volleyball team reached nationals in 2002 and the BC3 golf team made nationals last year.This year's NJCAA Division III National Volleyball Tournament is Nov. 13 and -14 in Rochester, Minn.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Martinsville Speedway president W. Clay Campbell said that Dick Thompson, the track's longtime public relations director, died Wednesday at age 74.Campbell said his grandfather, track founder H. Clay Earles, hired Thompson in 1966 to help publicize events at the track. Hired away from The Roanoke Times, where he wrote about racing, Thompson was innovative and helped usher the track and NASCAR into an era of track sponsors.Thompson retired after nearly 40 years in 2005.The press box at Martinsville Speedway is named for him.

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Sam Bradford had surgery on his injured right shoulder and the school called it a success.In a release sent out by the school Wednesday, Bradford's father says Dr. James Andrews informed him that the procedure went "just as we expected."Kent Bradford said his son was experiencing some soreness, but was otherwise resting comfortably in Alabama after a 35-minute surgery. The quarterback, who had sprained the AC joint in his shoulder, was expected to return to Oklahoma within the next day or two.Bradford has said he plans to enter the NFL draft if his recovery goes as planned. That process is expected to take four to six months.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, who made two gay slurs within a 24-hour period, was given what amounts to a one-game suspension Wednesday, but Johnson's agent said he would appeal.Agent Peter Schaffer said the game check and other lost revenue would amount to a penalty of about $600,000 for the former two-time Pro Bowler.In a three-sentence release, the Chiefs said Johnson would be suspended until Monday, Nov. 9 for conduct detrimental to the team. The Chiefs are on their bye week and will not play again until traveling to Jacksonville on Nov. 8.
