SRU wins pair from Indiana

Trailing by a run, the Slippery Rock University baseball team plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 4-3 victory over Indiana (Pa.) University in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday.

The Rock (27-15, 9-7) had defeated IUP 3-0 in the first contest.

In the second game's fifth inning, Will Kengor scored on a throwing error and John Shaffer scored the eventual winning run on Jake Weibley's base hit to left field.

Kengor and Austin Benshadle both ended the game with two hits. SRU starting pitcher Jon Anderson improved to 4-0 after working 4.2 innings, striking out two and walking three. He allowed three earned runs on three hits.

Anton Constantino pitched 2.1 scoreless innings for his second save of the season.

The first game was highlighted by Kyle Schneider's three-hit shutout, which featured four strikeouts and just one walk. SRU right-fielder Graeme Zaparzynski singled, doubled, drove in one run and scored twice.

SRU's women tallied six wins at the Ed Fry Invitational, held Saturday at IUP.Katelyn Wetzel won both the 100-meter dash (12.17 seconds) and the 200 dash (25.06).Wetzel was also a member of the winning 4x100 relay team, which bested the field with a time of 49.17. The squad included Samantha Zampetti, Emily Moroco and Lexie Nowakowski.Also earning first place for The Rock were Mariah Burns (11.18 meters in triple jump), Ashley West (1.65 in high jump) and Angela Schroeder (3.46 in pole vault).Seneca Valley graduate Jon Boyd led the men's effort with a win in the 110 hurdles (14.74 seconds).Hunter Williams, also an SV product, teamed with Trevor Foley, Slippery Rock High grad Ethan Geisler and Butler product Mason McLaughlin to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:26.12.Former Moniteau standout Victor Santoyo won the high jump with a clearance of 1.9 meters.Finally, Kyle Toms won the shot put with a throw of 15.62 meters.

Lauren Laubach, Jessica Verbic and Paige Costantino each scored a goal in SRU’s 15-3 loss to Bloomsburg.
