David W. Thompson, 74, of Grove City, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023.

David was born in Grove City on March 24, 1949, and was the son of Dean L. and Hazel (Early) Thompson. He married Mary L. Hamelly, on Jan. 8, 1994.

He was a graduate of Grove City High School in 1968. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971. David also served in the Army National Guard from 1973 to 1993.

David retired in 2011 after 10 years of service with USIS, Grove City. He was formerly employed by Cooper Energy Service for 28 years, where he was a melter in the plant’s foundry.

David was a member and past commander of VFW Post 519, Grove City, and he was a member of American Legion Post 852, Harrisville.

His favorite things were “his 3 Gs” — grandchildren, gardening and gambling.

David is survived by his wife, Mary, at home; three children, Bridget (John) Casteel of Grove City, Bonnie Thompson of Daytona Beach and Joseph J. Slonka IV of Grove City; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Peggy Adams, Dawn Grace, Karen Shoop and Susie Crispen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Larry, Gayle and Dean Thompson.

THOMPSON — Family and friends of David W. Thompson, who died Thursday, June 15, 2023, will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at CUNNINGHAM FUNERAL HOME, 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Prairie Cemetery, Harrisville, with military honors.
