SRU track nets PSAC West Challenge win
The Slippery Rock University men's and women's track and field teams captured the PSAC West Challenge on Saturday at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
SRU amassed 282 points while Lock Haven was second with a distant 144 points. Clarion followed with 108 points, then Indiana (91), California (75.5), Mansfield (37.5) and Edinboro (26).
Nate Hardic tossed the javelin 211 feet, 10 inches to win the event as well as earn an automatic berth in the NCAADivision II national championships.
Mars graduate Brad Mueller (100, 10.56 seconds), Tim Tray (pole vault, 16-1.25) and Jeff Weiss (1,500) also won and recorded provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA championships.
Also winning their events were Adam Jones (shot put, 15.5 meters) and hammer throw (49.65 meters) and Nate Shadeck (400 hurdles, 54.14).
In the women's event, Freeport graduate Lacey Cochran won the 200 (25.32) and 400 (57.25) dashes while Tiffany Tedesco won the 100 (12.59), Raissa Weiss the 5,000 (18:52.02) and Jennifer Hansen the pole vault (3.66 meters) and both the 400 relay and 1,600 relay.
SRU dropped a doubleheader to Indiana (Pa.) 2-1 and 2-0 on Saturday, then followed up with 3-2 and 5-4 losses on Sunday against Edinboro.On Saturday, Sheree Horvath hit a home run, while a single by Jordan Zeunges and a double by Jessica Ellebruch accounted for the team's three hits.In the nightcap, Courtney Vincent and Stacey Rhoades had two-run singles, but the team came up short.On Sunday, The Rock (14-10, 0-8) was held to two hits in each game. An Ellebruch sacrifice bunt in the first inning of the first game drove in SRU's only run on the day.
Ashley Goodwill and Beth Choike had two goals each, but SRU closed out its home schedule with a 13-5 loss to No. 17 Indiana Sunday.On Saturday, SRU's (3-14) Sarah Sander and Heather Walbright had three goals apiece and Choike added a pair, but SRUfell to Grove City 9-8 in overtime.
Caitlin O'Brien scored two goals and assisted on another, but The Rock (0-10, 0-8) dropped an 18-4 decision to Millersville Sunday.
